I hopped on the Wilmington Trolley yesterday at lunch to hit the shops at the Riverfront. On my way there and back, I saw not one, but three different women wearing full burqas. They weren't even together, I just happened to see them at different times and places.
My first thought was "why on earth any woman living in the US would actually choose to wear such a thing?" But then I don't know much about the muslim religion. To me the burqa looks oppressive, but perhaps to them it means something else. I guess it's no weirder than orthodox Jewish women wearing shedls, or the Amish driving their buggies down busy highways. You just don't see many burqa-clad women around, especially in a little podunk town like this.
At least here in the US, they have the choice.

I've created another goodie for my portfolio of sculpts–the Waterhorse. He's for the OOAK forum creature swap. I also signed up for an artist's table at FaerieCon for this coming October, and I'd be willing to bet I could sell more than a few critters like him. Another step toward breaking the chains of the lowly wage-slave…

Damn. I almost look like I know what I'm doing. This was my table at the FSMC club show this past Sunday.
I only sold one doll–Marnie bought Ian, the Scotsman in the red kilt. It was toward the end of the day, and all I'd managed to sell was a lousy $3 package of viscose wigging. Marnie's bought several of Jamie Carrington's dolls ($500 a pop), so I figured she was just doing it to be nice. At least it covered the table fee! Then Nancy overheard her telling someone that she considered it an investment since once I get well known my prices will go way up! I had a lot of inquiries, a couple of possible commissions, gave away a crapload of business cards. It was a little discouraging to only make one sale, but at least it got me some exposure. That and now I know a few more things about what to do differently next time in setting up.
So, if nothing else, it was a practice run. Yesterday and today, I sent out apps for 2009 Chicago International, IGMA and Philadelphia Miniaturia. That, and I typed up my IGMA Artisan application which is due May 8. I have to send 5 dolls in for evaluation. Maybe it's a good thing I didn't sell a bunch of them–I've still got enough to send in for evaluation.
But the big three shows are only a year away–now I really gotta get to work.
